COVID-19 cuts baseball season short

After what was an exciting series against the number 3 team in the nation, the Minot State Baseball team was riding high into conference play. The Beavers came home to rest up and recharge with a two-week break before their spring break road trip. During this time the virus known as COVID-19 was moving quickly throughout the United States and rumors were spreading about the cancelation of all NCAA and all professional sports. Just as cases began to hit the Midwest region, the NSIC announced that they were canceling all spring sports to take caution for the safety and health of the athletes.

Even though it was a disappointing end to a year they all worked hard for, the Beavers understand the seriousness of the situation at hand and the role they play in it. Head Coach Scott Eul is one of many taken by surprise but knows that the safety of the players comes first.

"It’s a tough deal, but it’s something that probably needed to happen and hopefully down the road it was for the better,” Eul mentioned in a press conference.

For some seniors, this marks the end of their time at Minot State University as both athletes and students. For others, the NCAA’s decision to grant an extra year of eligibility in lieu of this season means that the team will get another run at a championship with many of the same faces.

Redshirt Freshman Nathan Slobodian was very optimistic about the team’s chances for next season.

“Obviously we’re a little disappointed, but we get the chance to do it all over again next year.”

Hopes are high during this time and for everyone on the team the hope is that they can pick up where they left off.

The Beavers finished the season at 8 wins and 6 losses. For the team, getting most of the seniors back will provide a lot of confidence heading into next season. With an incoming class of freshmen and community college transfers, next year looks to be even better for the Minot State Baseball team.
