Features editor wins SPJ award and looks to future after graduation
Yun Ji Nam, a senior, is an international student from South Korea who came to Minot State to study sociology and addiction studies. During her time at Minot State, Nam began writing book and movie reviews for the Red & Green; in fall 2018, she started as the features editor for the student newspaper.
“I like writings in general. It's a nice feeling to write out my own thoughts and express my opinions about film arts and politics; however, seeing other writers voicing their opinions and presenting it on a newspaper is a satisfying feeling, too. I enjoy my job, especially the part where I can reach out to different writers to discuss their creative ideas,” Nam said.
Because of MSU’s affordable tuition, Nam was able to come to Minot State without worrying too much about financial burden. She is satisfied with the education she is receiving here.
“I personally love the small class size; I enjoy interacting with the professors face-to-face. Some colleges are too big that it is impossible to build such bonds between students and or get suggestions from the professors”, Nam said.
Coming to North Dakota and adjusting to a different life in Minot was difficult for Nam. She is, however, proud of the fact that she made it through the difficulties.
“It was difficult to adjust in the beginning because I am from the city, and Minot was completely opposite to what I was used to. It was difficult to find things to occupy myself first. I tried to look at positive side of things; even though North Dakota may not be the first choice for many to receive education or learn about cultures, I believe that North Dakota has its own unique charm and has plenty possibilities for growth,” Name said.
Nam graduates this spring and plans to earn her addiction counselor license in North Dakota upon completing her internship; however, her long-term goal is to continue to write. Nam won a Page One award from the Minnesota Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for her movie review of “Crazy Rich Asians.”
Josh Strong, a freshman multimedia studies major, will take over as features editor for the 2019-2020 academic year beginning in the fall.
