Lewis leads team in goals going into tournament
Sophia Lewis, sophomore midfielder, is a consistent player this year assisting the soccer team to multiple wins. With scoring 14 goals this season, Lewis has been getting the job done on the offense.
“Sophia Lewis is really good. Super-fast, super technical, she is a local kid and has learned how to self-train and work," head coach, Jason Spain said. "She’s a very coachable player and I’m sure she’ll break every record here.”
With Lewis working hard all off-season it shows on the field when the she’s playing.
“During the Summer I work out like four times a day. I run to weights to do those then run back, go on a run, play soccer, and finish with some other type of training,” Lewis said. “I just make sure my fitness level is good, because that’s like 50% of soccer on the college level and I just make sure my touch on the ball is steady and sharp.”
Lewis started playing soccer at age 13 and has been working to better herself ever since.
“She puts in the work while nobody else is watching and has been doing that since a very young age,” Spain said.
Lewis scored a hat-trick, scoring three goals in a single game, against Minnesota Crookston on Oct. 7.
“I kind of went through a dry spell, not scoring. So when I scored within the first four minutes of that game, it was such a relief to finally get on the board again,” Lewis said. “After that, the goals just start coming in.”
The Minot State, soccer team will be hosting St. Cloud tonight at 5:30 p.m. at Herb Parker Stadium in the first round of NSIC tournament play.
