KMSU launches football pregame show this fall

Leif Bakken (left) interviews head coach Mike Aldrich during KMSU's new football pregame show last week.

The Minot State University Saturday Showdown, a new 30-minute MSU football pregame show, is hosted and produced by broadcasting majors and airs before all Beaver home games on Channel 19 and streams live on KMSU Channel 19’s YouTube page.

The show offers students a unique opportunity to practice what they’ve learned during their time at Minot State.

“We all have this experience now, so if we’re asked to do it, we’ll do it. Whether it’s doing sound board or being technical director, people who like being behind the scenes getting hands-on experience is important. People who want to be on camera, that’s important, too,” Leif Bakken, host and broadcasting major, said.

One of the benefits of KMSU having its own public access channel is the ability to produce original programming for the local community and surrounding areas.

“There aren’t many comm. departments or broadcasting departments that do live content, so I think we separate ourselves in a big way,” Neil Roberts, broadcasting associate professor, said.

As students continue to get hands-on experience working on shows like the Saturday Showdown, Sports Splurge, or MSU Inside Out, they say it’s important to appreciate all those who make these shows possible.

“It’s really nice to have good partnerships on campus and across the region, so kudos to the athletic department, to the coaching staffs, Andy Carter, and Mike Aldrich for being accessible, understanding what we’re doing, making themselves available, and that makes everything positive going forward,” Roberts said.

The next Saturday Showdown will air Oct. 14 at 10:30 a.m. as the Beavers take on the Beavers of Bemidji State University at 1 p.m.
